1 Samuel 16:1–4 NASB95
1 Now the Lord said to Samuel, “How long will you grieve over Saul, since I have rejected him from being king over Israel? Fill your horn with oil and go; I will send you to Jesse the Bethlehemite, for I have selected a king for Myself among his sons.” 2 But Samuel said, “How can I go? When Saul hears of it, he will kill me.” And the Lord said, “Take a heifer with you and say, ‘I have come to sacrifice to the Lord.’ 3 “You shall invite Jesse to the sacrifice, and I will show you what you shall do; and you shall anoint for Me the one whom I designate to you.” 4 So Samuel did what the Lord said, and came to Bethlehem. And the elders of the city came trembling to meet him and said, “Do you come in peace?”

“ When People Drain You “

We will see
In the text
That the text is tailored to teach us
That Samuel is mourning
Over Saul
Because Saul has DRAINED Samuel
And every believer
Will experience a Saul
In their life
Sooner or Later
That they will drain you
And you will have to know
How to deal with people
That have DRAINED YOU
And that you have poured
Into Them
And you have gotten NOTHING in return
Note: Matter of fact that was the life of Jesus that we can learn from Him
This story begins
when the children of Israel
decided
that they wanted a king
and Israel
wanted a King
because they seen that
all the other nations
had a king
They wanted to look like
And act like
the other nations
NOTE: Things will always go wrong when you want to look like someone else & have what someone else have. ( Israel ) ( The Church )
so Israel
wants a King
and God gives them
a King named Saul
Unfortunately
for Israel
Saul turned out
to be more interested
in his own glory
than in leading his people
in a godly way
So even after Saul
ascended the throne
the search continued
The rejection of Saul
did not force the Lord
to a new course of action
Rather
God’s action
followed
His omniscient plan
in such a way
as to use Saul’s
disobedience
as the human occasion
for implementing
His higher plan — Don’t despise people trickiness against you God can use it
Saul had substituted
Saying for Doing (15:13);
Excuses for Confessions (15:15 and 21);
and Sacrifice for Obedience (v. 22).
He was too quick
to criticize
and blame others
he was unwilling
to face and judge his own sins
Saul was a king
that continuously
disobeys the Lord
from the beginning
Things really getting bad
in Chapter 15
where King Saul
in direct disobedience
and defiance of Gods word
Saul spares
the king of the Amalekites
Agag
And all the good spoils ( Everything )
of the Amalekites
The Israelites
go to war
against the Amalekites
& the Lord
tells Saul
To destroy everything
What Saul does
is destroy almost
everything
but keep all the richest
of the land
& spares King Agag Life
God
is so displeased
with Saul ( No Partial Obedience )
Because God
is so displeased
with Saul
in chapter 15
we find two things
1st. God regrets ( Repenteth or Repent ) choosing Saul ( Repent - to sigh, a loud deep breathe )
Repenteth — that God didn’t change His mind just that God will deal with Saul another way [ Look that word up ]
2nd. Samuel begins to mourn over Saul
In chapter 16
God shows up
& ask Samuel
a real question,
“ How long will you mourn over Saul”
In other words
Samuel
how long
will you stay
In this place
& not move on
God is displease
with Samuel
because you're mourning
when I got another replacement
for Saul & that’s David — God got BETTER
David is waiting
in Bethlehem
and David don’t know
what his destiny is
So Samuel
needs to move quickly
The same way
God used Samuel
to tell Saul
that he was going to be King
Now he wanted Samuel
to do the same thing
with David
that he’s going to be King
And David
can not be King
until Samuel Anoints him
And Samuel
is sitting right there
mourning over Saul
& the entire destiny of Israel is on hold
Note: Do you see what happens when God has anointed you to do something and you’re not in ministry, the whole church is held up.
And God gets Samuel attention
to tell him
that I’m turning the season
in your life
I’m turning the chapter
of your life
I’m opening a new door
in your life
I had to close this door with Saul
God suddenly sends Samuel
on a mission
to find
the next king of Israel
which is not
exactly the remedy
for depression
Samuel would have concocted himself
He is more
than a little reluctant
to go out
anointing a new king
knowing
how passionate
the current king
is about his own kingdom and name and honor
God’s plan
sounds like
a recipe
for disaster
Note: God when send you and tell you to do some strange things at times but leave the consequences to God

“ When people have drained you

1st You have to learn how to move on ( V. 1 )

1 Samuel 16:1 NASB95
1 Now the Lord said to Samuel, “How long will you grieve over Saul, since I have rejected him from being king over Israel? Fill your horn with oil and go; I will send you to Jesse the Bethlehemite, for I have selected a king for Myself among his sons.”
Note: Nobody wants to hear that statement when it’s them that have been DRAINED or HURT
Note: There’s somethings you just got to get pass so it don’t hinder your assignment from the Lord
Ver. 1. “How long wilt thou mourn,” etc. “These words show that the prophet had not yet been able to reconcile himself to the hidden ways of the Lord; that he was still afraid that the people and kingdom of God would suffer from the rejection of Saul, and that he continued to mourn for Saul, not merely from his own personal attachment to the fallen king, but also, and perhaps still more, from anxiety for the welfare of Israel.”
Note: Staying in a STALE - STAGNANT - SOUR place keeps you in a unhealthy place spiritually and physically and mentally
Note: What REALLY keeps you from moving on is.... PRIDE.
[ When you don’t move on ]
It hinders your walk with God
Note: If Samuel is the Prophet & he is suppose to know what God hand is on & what God hand is off of something, why doesn’t Samuel know that God has rejected Saul
You hold on to the PAST —Through the centuries, Christians have often been trapped by their inability to turn loose of those things which no longer seem to serve God’s purpose. We grow accustomed to institutions, organizations, programs, ways of thinking, and ways of doing things. We develop such an emotional attachment to them that long after their usefulness to God is past we hold tenaciously to them. We often need help from God to turn loose of what is past and to face the future that God has planned for us.
Quote: Sometimes the hardest thing to get rid of is something that no longer meets a need.
You don’t ACCEPT what God has ALLOWED
Note: Verse 1 —— Samuel is mourning over Saul & Saul is not dead
Note: Samuel is mourning over the investment he made in Saul & everything Saul has Saul owes it to Samuel.
Note: Samuel is mourning cause there want be a return in his investment [ You feel you have lost resources and time ]
Note: “ I’ve DONE too much for them “
Note: Samuel, how are you going to cry over something that I have rejected, I have moved out of the way.

“ When people drain you”

1st You have to learn how to move on ( V. 1 )

2nd Don’t let people that Drain you hinder you from doing for others ( V. 1b )

1 Samuel 16:1–2 ESV
1 The Lord said to Samuel, “How long will you grieve over Saul, since I have rejected him from being king over Israel? Fill your horn with oil, and go. I will send you to Jesse the Bethlehemite, for I have provided for myself a king among his sons.” 2 And Samuel said, “How can I go? If Saul hears it, he will kill me.” And the Lord said, “Take a heifer with you and say, ‘I have come to sacrifice to the Lord.’
“ Fill your horn with oil and go “ — EXPLAIN
Note: Often times when people have drained us we don’t want to do for NO ONE else

“ When people drain you “

1st You have to learn how to move on ( V. 1 )

2nd Don’t let people that Drain you hinder you from doing for others ( V. 1b )

3rd Don’t question God’s command ( v. 2 )

1 Samuel 16:2 NASB95
2 But Samuel said, “How can I go? When Saul hears of it, he will kill me.” And the Lord said, “Take a heifer with you and say, ‘I have come to sacrifice to the Lord.’
Note: Samuel is not asking God a question , Samuel is questioning God [ The Difference ]
Samuel realizes that if he anoints David as king while Saul is still king that’s call treason and Saul would have Samuel killed.
Note: But obey God and leave the consequences to God !
